When to call 911

Call 911 immediately if you or someone else is experiencing an emergency. An emergency is any situation that requires immediate assistance from police, fire, or medical services.

Examples include:

  • A crime in progress or suspicious activity that poses danger 
  • A fire or explosion 
  • Someone having trouble breathing, chest pain, or severe injury 
  • Car crashes with injuries 
  • Medical emergencies where someone is unconscious, bleeding heavily, or in danger      of dying 

Do not call 911 for non-emergencies such as power outages, loud music, or general questions. 

For those situations, please the non-emergency number: 256-381-0911.

What to Expect When Calling 911

The dispatcher will answer: “911, what is the address of your emergency?”
 

Be ready to provide:
 

  • Your location (address, landmarks, or cross streets)
  • The type of emergency (medical, fire, police)
  • Your phone number
  • Details of what’s happening
  • Stay calm, follow instructions, and do not hang up until told it’s okay.
  • If you call 911 by mistake, stay on the line and explain it was accidental.

Tips for Callers

  • Know your location at all times.
  • Speak clearly and answer all questions.
  • If you can’t talk, try to text 911.
  • Keep kids educated on when and how to call 911 responsibly.
